DEO Projects
My Dreams Were Dashed Against Your Walls
Curated by Akis Kokkinos, Founder of DEO Projects
6 July 8 September 2024
Medieval Village of Vessa, Chios

Eight international artists present new, site-specific, large-scale installations as well as existing artworks, transforming the entire village of Vessa into a contemporary art experience. In these volatile times of global uncertainty, the village of Vessa offers space for a transformative stroll of introspection and redefinition. The winding paths of the settlement, the half-ruined walls and the scenes of everyday life in the stone-built, dead-end streets bear witness to the passage of time, loss and the cyclical patterns of regeneration.
The participating artists share their personal experiences, inviting us to reflect on our human condition. They juxtapose their diverse visual voices with the echoes of the village’s medieval architecture and atmosphere, to present a multimedia poetic narrative in a labyrinthine form. In the alleys of Vessa, some artworks tell powerful stories of unfulfilled love, lost childhood, and abandonment; others, hidden from plain sight, appear momentarily to offer hope, redirecting us to what is vital, and allowing us to breathe.
My Dreams Were Dashed Against Your Walls explores the space between movement and inertia, silence and noise, the “inside” and the “outside”, listening to areas where time itself stands still. The artists draw a parallel between the stillness of the village and the numbness that often accompanies unresolved trauma, walking side by side with the visitor along paths of healing.
The exhibition also includes a new commissioned video work by the Oral History Group of Chios, featuring testimonies from current residents of Vessa: a living archive of the social fabric of the settlement, sharing stories of faded, shattered or realised dreams.
My Dreams Were Dashed Against Your Walls is a peripatetic journey that asks us to look within ourselves and at the world we inhabit. Reflecting the pathologies of the global, Vessa stands as a reference to the resilient spirit of communities around the world and their dreams of forging new paths.
An extensive public programme of talks, workshops, trekking, guided tours, and educational activities will complement the exhibition throughout its duration.

Maria Loizidou at the Whitechapel

A Century of the Artist’s Studio: 1920-2020
24 February – 5 June 2022

Whitechapel Gallery presents a 100-year survey of the studio through the work of artists and image-makers from around the world.
Whether it be an abandoned factory, an attic or a kitchen table, it is the artist’s studio where the great art of our time is conceived and created. In this multi-media exhibition, the wide-ranging possibilities and significance of these crucibles of creativity take centre stage and new art histories around the modern studio emerge through striking juxtapositions of under-recognised artists with celebrated figures in Western art history.

The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, installations and films depicting the studio as work of art and presents documentation of artists’ studios by world-renowned photographers and film-makers. A series of ‘studio corners’ also recreate the actual environments where great art has been produced.

Exhibition: 'You and AI: Through the Algorythmic Lens"

Organised by Onassis STEGI

Venue: Pedion tou Areos.

Bill Balaskas & Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, Before the bullet hits the body, 2021, ground mural at Pedion tou Areos.

The work takes its title from the seminal 2018 report by the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, which led to the dismantlement of “predictive” policing programmes of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). The algorithm presented at Pedion tou Areos describes an area’s predicted rate of crimes based on its historical average rate of crimes combined with recent trends. The Coalition’s community organizing expanded the critique of LAPD’s algorithm beyond just questioning the “feedback loop,” showing how police use the veneer of science to mask their violence and, thus, exposing crime data as a social construct intended to contain, control, and criminalize Black, brown, and poor communities. The Coalition argued that surveillance and crime data create the conditions of police violence “before the bullet hits the body.” These conditions include incidents of police brutality like the 2020 killing of George Floyd, which led to global protests by the Black Lives Matter movement. The installation adopts the visual language of these protests, which included slogans written on major roads in the U.S. Along with the installation at Pedion tou Areos, the project consists of a curated presentation of the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition’s work on Stegi’s website and a series of online discussions.

Maria Loizidou

Look Under The Hood
at Garage Art Gallery, Nicosia
27 September - 31 October 2019
In the context of a retrospective approach, the artist shapes a platform for workshops, discussions and challenges for the production of thought and new proposals.

Loizidou re-connects with 22 venues in Nicosia, with which she has collaborated over the course of her 35 years of work. In collaboration with artists, art theorists, journalists, poets and historians, new synergies are proposed, adapted to the current activities of each venue.

This approach contributes to understanding our dialectical relationship with art and the city, thanks to the diversity of the reasons supporting it and by questioning the means of documentation of memory.

Performance: "reading stones"

a piece for one bass tuba and five stones

Thursday 27 June 2019, 19:30h

Kalfayan Galleries, 11 Haritos Street, Kolonaki, Athens

proposition by Yiannis Papadopoulos

read and performed by Sarah De Wilde**

Special publications in limited editions are released on the occasion of the performance.

In the context of his solo exhibition titled "the book of stones", Yiannis Papadopoulos proposes the shapes of the stones depicted in his paintings, to be read as a score for a brass instrument (bass tuba).low frequency

On this instrument sound comes from a vibrating column of air inside the instrument. The sound is round, earthy, cavernous and resonant.

The performance is an attempt to synch both sonic and visual frequencies in order to produce one singular vibe. It is a short walk through the subtle qualities of resonances in the spaces between things. One could say for instance, under hitherto unobserved circumstances stones were able to speak*.

* from Robert Musil's "The Man Without Qualities"

** Sarah De Wilde is an artist working with film and sound

Yiannis Papadopoulos

Residency at WIELS, Contemporary Art Centre
Brussels

Yiannisʼ work is inspired by his deep interests in the classical sources of the arts and sciences, their impact on modernity and their continued relevance in the contemporary understanding of the world. The range of his references –from geometry and Greek philosophy to European Scholasticism and the Enlightenment– reflects Yiannisʼ historical awareness and through this, his commitment to addressing some of the most pertinent cultural and political issues which define –and divide- todayʼs Europe. His practices drawing simultaneously on the traditions of the performing and plastic arts, literature and poetry, making his work notable from its sparse formal qualities and aesthetic economy.

Yiannis Papadopoulos (b. 1975, Patras GR) lives in Athens and Antwerp and has studied Mathematics, Fine Arts and Typography, in Greece, The Netherland and in Belgium. Nominated for DESTE prize 2015, granted from Kunsten en Erfgoed and V. Valambous prize GR. Selected recent exhibitions include Unpacking my library, cur. T. Pandi, A. "Precision German Craftsmanship"
The title was borrowed from a poem by the American poet Matthew Rohrer, in which he describes his ideas of German craftsmanship, especially with regards to the proverbial German thoroughness and precision. Kostis Velonis plays with this idea and intentionally creates crafts which are not based on such values. The smoothness and polish of typical design products are substituted by scratching on the raw surfaces and the aspect of deterioration and collapse of the cultural object. Most of the surfaces of these objects remain dirty, smudgy and stained, offering their own narratives.

Stefanos Tsivopoulos

On Wednesday March 2nd Wiels, centre for contemporary art in Brussels hosts the book launch of Archive Crisis by artist Stefanos Tsivopoulos.

Archive Crisis consists of previously unpublicized visual and textual records that document three distinct political moments in Greeces recent past; the Truman Doctrine, the Dictatorship of the Colonels, and the Marxist Revolutionary Organization 17 November. Tsivopoulos organized and edited this material in the form of a multi-layered visual essay, after an extensive research into both private and public media archives over a period of seven years. Tsivopoulos is interested in these records as visual by-products of tumultuous political times, marked by nationalist propaganda, crypto-colonialism and terrorism. He reintroduces them as the remainders of an unsettling past and a present in crisis.

The book furthermore includes commissioned essays by Dimitris Antoniou (Adjunct Assistant Professor Hellenic Studies at Columbia University), Hilde de Bruijn (freelance curator and Curator at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art) and Alfredo Cramerotti (Director of MOSTYN, Llandudno, Wales) providing academic reflection and linking these historical images to a broader contemporary context.

Editors: Hilde de Bruijn, Stefanos Tsivopoulos
Design: NODE Berlin Oslo
Paperback, 176 pages, 21 x 28 cm, English
Published by Jap Sam Books
Supported by the Mondriaan Fund
ISBN 978-94-90322-44-1

Programme
Introduction to the book by Amsterdam-based curator Hilde de Bruijn, one of its co-editors and authors.
Presentation by the artist into his relationship to archive material, specifically the images in Archive Crisis and their urgency in relation to the current and historical international context of Greece.
Followed by an interview with WIELS Senior Curator, Zoë Gray.

Stefanos Tsivopoulos is a Greek artist and filmmaker. His poetic and often allegoric works, are driven by a strong interest in the sociopolitical and economic aspects that determine the world we live in. His films are presented in both art museums and film festivals around the world. In 2013 he represented Greece in the 55th Venice Biennial with the work History Zero.

On Tuesday March 1st, 2016 Manifesta (Amsterdam) organizes the book launch of Archive Crisis by former Manifesta 8 artist Stefanos Tsivopoulos.

Archive Crisis consists of unpublicized visual and textual records that document three distinct political moments in Greeces recent past; the Truman Doctrine, the Dictatorship of the Colonels, and the Marxist Revolutionary Organization 17 November. Tsivopoulos organized and edited this material in the form of a multi-layered visual essay, after an extensive research in both private and public media archives over a period of seven years. Tsivopoulos is interested in these records as visual by-products of tumultuous political times, marked by, among other things, nationalist propaganda, crypto-colonialism and terrorism and reintroduces them as the remainders of an unsettling past and a present in crisis. The visual essay further focuses on the tactility and pictorial idiosyncrasies of these photographs in light of the immateriality of the digital age.

The book furthermore includes commissioned essays by Dimitris Antoniou, Hilde de Bruijn, Alfredo Cramerotti providing academic reflection and linking these historical images to a broader contemporary context. Awards of the 56th International Art Exhibition
The Golden Lion for the national pavilion goes to Republic of Armenia for forming a pavilion based on a people in diaspora, each artist engaging their specific locality as well as their heritage. The pavilion took the form of a palimpsest, with contemporary positions inserted into a site of historic preservation. In a year that witnesses a significant milestone for the Armenian people, this pavilion marks the resilience of trans-cultural confluence and exchanges.

Arab Express: The Latest Art from the Arab World
Mori Art Museum,  53F Ropponngi Hills Mori Tower, Tokyo
16 June - 28 October 2012

All eyes are now on the contemporary artists of the Arab world.

From lifestyles to identity, the rapidly transforming Arab world possesses a diversity of cultures that cannot be overstated. And the traditions, religion, customs and aesthetics that constitute that diversity are vividly reflected in the work of the regions artists.
In the last few years, many exhibitions of contemporary art from the Arab world have been held globally, and within the region itself there are indications that the art industry is maturing, with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art opening in Doha (Qatar) in 2010, and branches of the Louvre and the Guggenheim Museum now under construction in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). “Arab Express” introducing the artworks by 34 artists from the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding Arab countries, is the first exhibition of its kind ever to be held in Japan.

This exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Kingdom of Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates; as well as the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In the framework of the Greek Participation at the 54th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale
di Venezia 2011, a video presentation of Diohandis installation titled BEYOND REFORM
will be held at the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, on Thursday, 7 June 2012 at 20:00,
in collaboration with Kalfayan Galleries.

The 35-minute video presents the whole procedure of the realization of Diohandis site specific
installation, from the very beginning when the construction materials were transported to the
exhibition venue through the water channels of Venice, and were then unloaded at the area
surrounding the Greek Pavilion; it documents the construction of the building frame supported
by iron scaffoldings and covered with 10m high wooden boards, the architectural configuration
of the interior space, the water supply, the lighting, and the specially designed sound installation.

Hrair Sarkissian

Podbielski Contemporary
Berlin
24 September - 15 November 2011

Hrair Sarkissian belongs to a new generation of promising Middle Eastern artists, now internationally acknowledged. In his work Hrair Sarkissian raises issues of identity, politics, faith and space. Hrair Sarkissian presently lives in Damascus and London. The show is organised in collaboration with Kalfayan Galleries Athens-Thessaloniki. For the occasion a brochure will be published with a short essay by Nico Anklam.

The Zebiba series (2007) consists of portraits of pious men in Egypt who all have the Zebiba or prayer scar on their foreheads, caused by kneeling on a prayer rug or a Mussallah (Stone of God) and touching the ground with ones forehead. On one level, the worshipper aspires to disinvest himself from earthly culture. Paradoxically, the desire to become invisible when facing god, renders him more visible within his social environment. Overall it raises the universal issue of religious faith, integration, and tolerance.

The Churches series (2009) is realised in Amsterdam, a new and unfamiliar environment with different cultural coding. The photographed churches no longer serve as sacred spaces, but have been turned into public ones for social activities, such as reception halls, or music and dance clubs. By intentionally using only scarce natural light, these spaces are invested with a mystical atmosphere, which they otherwise no longer possess through their new function.

Navarino Natura Art Award 2011

The winner of the Navarino Natura Art Award 2011 is Barbara Fluxa from Spain.
Art is a very important part of the experience at Costa Navarino. A significant art collection with works from the 17th – 19th centuries together with more contemporary pieces is to be found at Navarino Dunes. This emphasis that has been given to Art is reflected also at the Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank. An exhibition of the winner of the Navarino Natura Art Award will be held each year in the permanent exhibition space Natura Art. The award has been established through the collaboration of Kalfayan Galleries (Athens-Thessaloniki), the NGO Organization Earth and Navarino Foundation. This international annual award aspires to become a dynamic platform which will address contemporary environmental themes through art.
The theme of this years award was Green Art and Nature, and artists were invited to submit video artworks/video installations which explored the harmonious co-existence of art and nature.

Amongst several entries from around the world, including Spain, Thailand, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Switzerland, USA, Austria, France and Greece, the winner of the Navarino Natura Art Award 2011 was Barbara Fluxa\'s six screen film entitled \"Future Testimony\".

Diohandi

Diohandi (b.1945) will present an extensive installation titled Beyond Reform in the Greek Pavilion, as part of the 54.th International Art Exhibtion – la Biennale di Venezia, opening in June. This exhibition is curated by Maria Marangou, and has been commissioned by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The Greek Pavilion is situated in the Giardini.

Taking as her starting point the overall theme of the 54.th International Art Exhibtion – la Biennale di Venezia, namely ILLUMInations, Diohandi will create a site specific installation in the Greek Pavilion. This major intervention will explore space and time and will see the pavilions interior and exterior revised, as an existing space which stands at a given point in time. The byzantine-like façade will be visible through small cracks in the surface of a new outer shell which will cover the original structure, while water light and sound will be dominant elements of the pavilions interior. Access to the interior will be via an ascending hallway running the length of the Pavilion between a surface of water, leading all the way up to sheer light. Following extensive research into the architecture and history of the Greek Pavilion, Diohandis new space will see the surrounding environment blend with the interior, proffering new ways in which building fabric, light, sound and water can coexist. Venices spatial structure and the citys historical features have also had a crucial role in developing the work.

Diohandi remarks in reference to ILLUMInations: “My research understands the theme in its deepest, most basic sense. Starting with what is a very specific, concrete, strictly rational space, I am intervening to reform the space, one that is different in terms of both structure and emotional charge, where the dialogue between viewer and work/space is at once ambiguous and animated. I am shaping the pavilions image, both outside and inside: the entire space is remodeled, although none of these interventions will actually affect the existing structure. Sound and light will also feature, which are indispensable to the work.”

Of the artist, curator Maria Marangou comments, “Diohandi is an artist almost exclusively concerned with site specific work, and especially with the relationship  between space and time. It is precisely her interest in specific spaces at specific moments in time that leads her to use materials found at the site of each of her works. The installation at the Greek pavilion in a way reflects, with Diohandis specific work, the current political state of Europe and of the world at large. It is at the same time, obviously, a comment on the contemporary Greek experience of economic recession and IMF tutelage: a place of light thrown into darkness and decline, holding on, almost willy-nilly it seems, to hopes of spiritual and sociopolitical reconstruction; in other words, to a vision of light that should bring along clarity of mind, as if the ultimate catharsis.”

Biography - Diohandi
Diohandi was born in Athens in 1945. She studied painting and engraving at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, as well as Architecture, Costume Design and Graphic Design in London and Rome. Since 1967, she has presented fourteen (14) solo exhibitions in cities including Rome, Athens, Nicosia, Edinburgh and Eleusis. She has participated in 119 group exhibitions in several countries including Greece and Cyprus, as well as in the VII Biennale de Paris and the XII Bienal de São Paulo. Diohandi has collaborated with Greek and European art historians and curators. She has won international awards in Italy, Ireland, Germany and Norway, while her works are in museums and private collections in amongst others: Greece, Italy, Poland, New York and the Seoul Olympic Park, Korea. She lives and works in Athens, Greece. Diohandi is represented by the Kalfayan Galleries, Athens, Thessaloniki.

Ala Dehghan

As Ala Dehghan (b.1982) completes her residency, the Delfina Foundation presents an open studio event and a public talk on Tuesday, 29 March 2011, 19.00-20.00.

Ala\'s capricious draughtmanship is drawn from Persian customs and traditions deeply embedded within an expansive and varied history; however, she has grown up in the paradoxical environment of post-revolution Iran. These significant contradictions are recreated in her art. She combines sensitive lines and strikingly bright colours, which are components of Persian miniature painting, with the contemporary scenes and the cultural and social experiences of life in Iran today.  Her process is intuitive, always unplanned and often imperfect. They are documentaries of her psyche, and connect people, objects and nature. Her work is an attempt to recreate the emotional suspense that she has lived through, and its multiple implications; an intricate line of humor and refinement in confrontation with tragedy and excitement.

The talk will be moderated by curator and writer, Vali Mahlouji, and aims to discuss themes and references in Ala\'s work as well as an in depth examination of techniques and materials.

The girl occupies the space and moves from room to room without being able to escape. She has an Obsessive Compulsive personality. All her movements are cyclical and repetitive, acting as Proustian triggers.

Out of Place
Tate Modern, Level 2

11 February 2011 – 17 April 2011

Tate Moderns Level 2 Gallery presents Out of Place, an exhibition that has arisen from a collaboration between Tate Modern and Darat al Funun, Amman, Jordan. The exhibition features four artists from different backgrounds whose diverse political and social circumstances have prompted them to consider their environment. The artists in Out of Place each explore the relationship between dominant political forces and personal and collective histories by looking at urban space, architectural structures and the condition of displacement.

Hrair Sarkissians In Between 2007 is a series of large-scale photographs of austere Soviet-style buildings left abandoned in the dramatic hills and valleys of rural Armenia. They register the paradox experienced by this Syrian artist of Armenian origin of returning to a land which he had only known from family stories, as the reality of the region replaced the country he had imagined. Taken in the village where she grew up, Ahlam Shiblis The Valley 2007-8 documents the lives of Palestinians facing restrictions when trying to build their houses. Goter 2002-3, her series on the Bedouin people of the Negev region who have settled in townships or temporary shanty towns also shows the impact of restrictions at the level of daily life.

In the 1970s, Ion Grigorescu began recording everyday scenes in his home city of Bucharest with an 8mm camera. In his films and photographs he focuses on the unregimented activities taking place amid the rapidly changing urban landscape. His images of children playing, as well as of haphazardly discarded objects, contrast with the uniformity of the surrounding architecture from Romanias Communist past. Cevdet Ereks Shading Monument for the Artist 2009 reflects more generally on the possibilities of political art. The shadow-sculpture casts text on the gallery wall with varying intensity throughout the day; the words have been taken from memorials to those who fought in the Spanish Civil War. Appropriating these words for his artists monument, Erek blurs the status of political activism and artistic action.

Out of Place is curated by Kasia Redzisz and Ala Younis.

The Level 2 Gallery programme has been made possible with the generous support of Catherine Petitgas. It is conceived and led by Tate Moderns Assistant Curators, in dialogue with Tanya Barson, Curator.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Darat al Funun - The Khalid Shoman Foundation, Amman and Tate Modern, London initiated by Suha Shoman (Founder, Darat al Funun) and Sheena Wagstaff (Chief Curator, Tate Modern).

Presented at both venues, this exhibition is supported by the World Collections Programme with additional support from the Romanian Cultural Institute at Tate.

THE WEST AT SUNSET
December 9, 2010-February 20, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, December 9 - 6-8 pm
Public Programming Event: Saturday, January 29 - 2-9 pm

The Abrons Arts Center is proud to present The West at Sunset, a multidisciplinary group exhibition in response to a masterwork of spiritual literature, Rene Daumals 1952 novel Mount Analogue.

Artists:
Jaq Belcher
Alberto Borea
Amy Finkbeiner
MaryKate Maher
Rachel Pollak
Cyrus Saint Amand Poliakoff
Adam Parker Smith
Panos Tsagaris

Curator:  Adrian Geraldo Saldaña

Mount Analogue, a surrealist allegory of an expedition to the top of a holy mountain, garnered Daumal considerable recognition in France as a poet and student of mysticism. Unfinished due to his death from tuberculosis, the text notably provided the premise for Alejandro Jodorowskys 1973 film The Holy Mountain. The West at Sunset displays, in works installed throughout the Abrons Arts Centers multiple gallery spaces, the imagined remnants of this journey.

The concept of the mountain climb appealed to Daumal because, like his vision of spirituality, it involves both transcendent impulses and practical considerations. The novel, and the exhibition, seeks the possibility of holy sparks, but embedded in the world of matter — physical bodies, topographies and landscapes, water, and air. The exhibition brings together a group of contemporary artists whose practice considers our perception of space and geography with a second group whose forms and concepts depict ritualized human behavior.

The title of the exhibition refers to the particular alignment of the travelers ship that allows it to access the mountain, bridging the invisible and material worlds. Multiple installations in the exhibition are likewise modified by the shadows and the light created by the changing position of the sun, forging a living environment that shifts from day to night and back again.

Taken as a whole, The West at Sunset explores and finally confirms the spiritual and transcendent potential of human behavior within the natural world.
